This film covers their problems with second album syndrome and a tour to South Australia where some of their ancestors were deported in the 19th century. The film is directed by Meg Leonard and Nick Moorcroft, who produced the first film; James Purefoy, Daniel Mays, David Hayman, Maggie Steed and others return in their original roles.

On Friday September 2nd a group of films new to the Roses start their run. There is Where is Anne Frank, the animated film directed by Ari Folman and set in modern day Amsterdam, where Anne’s imaginary friend Kitty comes to life and sets out to discover Anne’s fate. John reviewed it in the newsletter two weeks ago. Then there is Beast, directed by Baltasar Kormakur, an action thriller starring Idris Elba as a widower who takes his two teenage daughters on holiday to a game reserve in South Africa, where they are hunted by a huge angry lion. There is also Bullet Train, directed by David Leitch, starring Brad Pitt as an unlucky assassin who finds himself in competition with a group of other assassins for various targets. Maybe soon we’ll get a film about an ineffectively sedated lion cub who escapes from his cage while being transported on a bullet train. Just a thought. And finally…to mark the 40th anniversary of Spielberg’s E.T. there are three screenings of it over the weekend.

Saturday 3rd September is National Cinema day and all tickets are £3.

As the school holidays are almost over there is scope for a few more interesting films at the Roses. I’ll write about them in the appropriate week, but for those of you who like forward planning look out for Hit the Road, a brilliant Iranian film, Robust, with Gerard Depardieu at his laconic world-weary best, Eiffel, with Romain Duris as the constructor of the tower, and Three Thousand Years of Longing, a magical mythological tale with Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.

Full details on the Roses website here.
